About the Companion Animal Institution

Knowledge That Makes a Difference

We believe better outcomes for animals begin with better-informed people.

Our resources are designed to explain not only what to do, but why it matters. By making information practical and accessible, we help people build confidence, make thoughtful decisions and provide care that supports an animal’s physical, behavioural and emotional needs.

Our growing collection will include educational guides, practical information sheets, operational resources and best-practice guidance covering rescue, fostering, adoption, behaviour, health, responsible care and animal welfare.

The Companion Animal Institution was created to make trusted companion animal knowledge easier to find, understand and put into practice.

Caring for companion animals involves many people. Pet owners, foster carers, adopters, volunteers, rescue organisations and animal care professionals all play an important part in shaping an animal’s wellbeing. However, reliable guidance is not always easy to access, and people are often left trying to make difficult decisions without the practical information they need.

CAI brings together evidence-based knowledge, real-world experience and compassionate thinking to create clear, useful resources for everyone involved in companion animal care.

Grounded in Experience, Growing Through Knowledge

The Companion Animal Institution knowledge tree is more than a logo. Every part represents who we are, what we value and what we hope to achieve.

The roots represent knowledge, experience and the strong foundations created by people working across animal welfare. They remind us that meaningful progress begins by learning from what has come before us.

The trunk symbolises strength, stability and connection. It brings everything together, turning shared knowledge into practical resources that can support animals, people and rescue organisations.

The branches represent the many pathways through animal welfare, including fostering, adoption, education, leadership, community support and responsible pet care. Although each branch may take a different direction, they all grow from the same purpose.

The leaves represent fresh ideas, continued learning and positive growth. The paw prints remind us that every resource, conversation and improvement should ultimately make life better for companion animals.

The touches of gold reflect those special moments when knowledge leads to meaningful change.

Together, the tree represents knowledge that is firmly grounded, generously shared and always growing.

Our Approach

CAI is guided by knowledge, compassion, animal welfare, integrity, practicality, community and growth.

We recognise that every animal, person and situation is different. Our aim is not to overwhelm people with information or offer one answer for every circumstance. We provide thoughtful, adaptable guidance that can be used in real homes, foster environments, rescue organisations and communities.

We remain curious, review information as knowledge develops and value the experience of those working directly with companion animals.

Growing a Better-Informed Community

The Companion Animal Institution is more than a collection of resources. It is a growing body of knowledge created to support better conversations, stronger practices and more informed decisions.

By sharing knowledge generously and responsibly, we can help people feel better equipped to care for animals and contribute to lasting improvements in companion animal welfare.

Our roots are in knowledge. Our purpose is better care. Our growth is measured by the difference we make for animals.

Animals come first. Every system, resource, policy and learning opportunity should ultimately contribute to their wellbeing and quality of life.
